UK therapists offering osteopathy or chiropractic
Osteopathy and chiropractic are complementary therapies that not only take in the physical symptoms, but address lifestyle, attitudes and holistic health.
Osteopathy is a system of therapy that emphasizes normal body mechanics and manipulation to correct faulty body structures. A chiropractor also attempts to restore normal function by manipulation and treatment of the structures of the body, especially those of the spinal column. Chiropractic is based on the theory that disease is caused by abnormal function of the nervous system.
Since 9 May 2000 the title 'osteopath' is protected by law and it is a criminal offence for anyone to claim to be any kind of osteopath unless registered with the General Osteopathic Council
. In addition many osteopaths are members of The British Osteopathic Association
which is the largest professional association for osteopaths in the UK. Similarly since June 2001 the title of 'chiropractor' has been protected by law and it is a criminal offence to describe oneself as any sort of chiropractor without being registered with the The General Chiropractic Council
