Summary

Getting your website verified with Norton can give your website visitors extra peace of mind, and may increase the number of people clicking through to your website.

Introduction

Norton specialises in internet security, so some of your website visitors may be using products such as anti-virus software on their computer. One option for Norton customers is to install the Norton Toolbar in their browser which flags up during Google searches those websites which it thinks are safe to visit, and those which might be risky.

Once your own website is live, Norton will eventually rate it as "safe to visit", but with the number of websites out there it may take a while before they get to your website. However, you can identify yourself to Norton as the website owner, and shortcut the process of getting your website verified and rated. Once that is done, those people searching Google who also have Norton toolbar installed, will be informed that your website is safe to visit.

Overview

Getting your website verified as safe by Norton is quite straightforward, though it needs a little of our help. There are just 3 steps to complete the process:

  1. Identify yourself as the website owner - this involves setting up a free Norton account if you don't have one and telling Norton your website address. Norton then sends you a verification code.
  2. Send us the code - we can then insert it into your website for you
  3. Complete verification and request a rating

This simple process will mean that your website should be rated as "safe to visit" by Norton a bit sooner than if you choose not to go ahead with this.

1. Identify yourself as the website owner

The first thing you need to do is to click this link to go to http://safeweb.norton.com/ (this opens in a separate window). First you'll need to sign in, or sign up to Norton, via the link top right - just Click "Sign In" anyway, and on the next screen, if you don't have an account, Click "Sign Up Now"...

Just put your details into the screen that comes up, including your email address, and a password that you can remember for later. (You'll need to make a note of these details separately for later, when you'll need to sign in to your Norton account again to complete step 3.) Then click the "Sign Up" button. Then put your name into the confirmation screen, ticking that you have read and agree to the Ts and Cs...

Once you've signed in, you should be at a screen like this, where you can check your website, using the "is this site safe?" checker. Just put your website's www address into the box and click the magnifying glass...

Next you'll see that your website is "untested" by Norton, so as you're the site owner, follow their advice and "click here" as shown...

This will bring up your new Norton "user profile" screen, and you should then click "Add Site"...

Now enter your website's www address again, and click "Submit"...

Your website's www address will then appear on your Norton profile page, and you should click "Verify your site" in the "Action" column...

In the box that appears just below, click "Upload an HTML File" and then below that, click the link marked "here" to download the Authentication file...

In the box that pops up, click "Open" (don't click "Save") and you'll see a long string of letters and numbers (the 'code') come up in a blank page on your browser. The next step is to send us this code.

2. Send us the code

Please copy/paste the whole of the long string of letters and numbers into an email addressed to info@webhealer.net, and then we will do our bit for you, which is to set up the HTML file that Norton need to see in your website. Note that if you click "Verify Now", this won't work until after we've done our bit.

Once we've inserted the HTML file, we'll email you to let you know that you can complete the last part of the process.

3. Complete verification

Once you receive our email, confirming that we've uploaded the HTML file, you'll need to login to your Norton account again, using your email address and password that you saved when you signed up in step 1. As a reminder, this is the link to sign in : http://safeweb.norton.com/ Just click the "Sign In" button at top right and enter your details.

Once you're logged in, click "My Profile" top right, and "site dispute" to bring up the "verify your site" option again. As before, click on "verify your site", then "Upload an HTML File", but now the HTML file is in place, you can click the "Verify Now" button...

Click "OK" to confirm, and your ownership of your website should now be recognised by Norton.

Request a rating

All that work to get your website ownership verified by Norton will be wasted, if you don't do this last part! As the genuine owner of your website, the last thing you need to do is look under the "Action" column, which will have some more lines under it now, and click "rate site". Norton will then start the process of rating your website, and you can then choose to "Notify me when site rating changes", so that Norton can tell you when your website's status has moved on from "untested" to "safe". Once that happens, visitors with Norton Toolbar installed will see your website as "safe", and this can only make your website more appealing for them to visit as opposed to websites that aren't verified in this way.
